Lintukoto is an idea from Finnish mythology: a warm, safe haven located at the far edge of the world where sky and earth meet. A paradise-like, mythical place where birds migrate to spend the cold winter season.

How does it feel to move across borders and boundaries? What does it take to belong in a new land? Can the natural world offer us different ways of thinking about our human existence? This exhibition explores experiences of displacement and belonging through an installation that combines sculpture, sound and natural materials. Henna’s own experience of migration and family heritage of displacement comes together with her conversations with people seeking sanctuary, inviting empathy and reflection.

Inspired by birds rebuilding their homes in new places with materials available locally, Henna invites you to be part of building a human-size nest as a space of belonging within the gallery. The exhibition will also be a space to share stories of movement, migration, and making home in a new place – come and share yours, however long or short the distance travelled.

Lintukoto/Haven at Peter Scott Gallery (Lancaster University, Lancaster, LA1 4YW) from 24 March until 16 May 2025. Free entry, the gallery is open from 11am to 5pm (Monday-Friday).
