Kanerva Lehtonen appointed as Head of Communications and Development

The Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland has appointed Kanerva Lehtonen as Head of Communications and Development. She will begin her new role in June 2026.
Kanerva has built a decade-long career in London’s cultural sector. From helping launch creative digital platforms such as Dazed Club to expanding audience engagement and fundraising for contemporary arts through ICA Membership, she has developed expertise in communications, community building, strategic partnerships, and fundraising.
Her work is driven by a commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for emerging talent and fostering meaningful cultural exchange. Kanerva holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a BA in Theatre Research from the University of Helsinki.
“Joining the Finnish Institute feels like a natural next step in my journey of building communities, connecting people through ideas and collaboration, and creating cultural experiences. The Finnish Institute’s commitment to progressive culture and meaningful exchange strongly resonates with me, and I am thrilled to contribute to its next chapter”, says Lehtonen.
“We are excited to welcome a new colleague to our team. Together, we will continue building a more sustainable future through arts, culture, research and creativity. Kanerva brings a fresh development perspective, valuable experience, and great energy to our Institute and the wider network”, says Aleksi Malmberg, Director of the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland.
Lehtonen will start her work in June.
