For over three decades, the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland has served as a bridge between Finland, the UK, and Ireland. As the leading authority on Finnish culture and society in these regions, we actively create meaningful connections by bringing together artists, creative practitioners, cultural organisations, and policymakers.

Through innovative programming, we aim to:

  • Enhance connections and create engaging  dialogue between cultural professionals in Finland, the UK, and Ireland, focusing on performing arts, contemporary arts, and societal issues.
  • Create opportunities and encourage collaborations between cultural professionals, organisations, companies, and universities in both countries.
  • Strengthen relations between Finland, the UK, and Ireland while enriching the cultural landscape in all three nations.

Our goal is to position culture as a catalyst for positive social change, bridging divides and creating  a more harmonious and equitable future.

The Institute is seeking a new Director who will lead the development and implementation of the Institute’s strategic direction, operations, and fundraising efforts. Working closely with a small team of Programme Directors, your role will be to ensure that our programme aligns with the Institute’s objectives and delivers impact for our stakeholders. To remain relevant, you’ll actively stay informed about and analyse cultural and societal trends in Finland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, and build on the extensive network that the Institute has.

As the Director of the Institute, you are

A strong leader who:

  • Anticipates emerging cultural developments and proactively shapes the direction of the Institute’s programming in collaboration with the board and key stakeholders.
  • Inspires and motivates their team, creating a culture of equality and transparency.
  • Has a keen interest in and actively follows societal and cultural developments in Finland, the UK, and Ireland.

An effective manager who:

  • Is results-oriented and experienced in measuring programme effectiveness.
  • Is skilled at working collaboratively with a board to leverage the extensive expertise of trustees.
  • Demonstrates strong governance skills and a commitment to ethical and equitable practices.

A network builder who:

  • Has an extensive network within the cultural scene in Finland, the UK, and Ireland.
  • Continues to  develop strong relationships across borders and disciplines.
  • Actively creates innovative partnerships for impact and funding.

Qualifications:

  • Language proficiency: You are fluent in English and Finnish (written and spoken).
  • Education: Master’s degree or higher.
  • Fundraising skills: You have a proven track record in securing funding through grants, donations, and partnerships.
  • Excellent communications skills: You have the ability to deliver compelling presentations for diverse audiences.

The Director is recruited on a four-year contract. The Institute’s office is located at Somerset House in London. The new Director will commence their role in early 2025, subject to visa procedures.
